253: Krampus tradition in Austria

Krampus (Kramperl or Bartl) in Austria is a scary and terrifying character that is the opposite of Santa Clause (St. Nikolaus) who also appears during the pre-Christmas period!

Santa Claus gives gifts to the good kids and Krampus take away the bad kids who have done bad things recently or has evil intentions!

Of course, these will be the claims of their fathers and mothers! (Kind of education method that may not be approved today!). Some parents invite Krampus (people dressed as Krampus) into their homes for a make-believe show for the kids!

What does Krampus look like?

  • Animal skin
  • Carved wooden mask
  • Hanging bells
  • Long sticks
  • Chains
  • Sacks or Cages (To take children with them)

Today, children almost do not believe such stories. But it is still an attractive tradition for many of them! Even for their elders!

Sometimes this parade in the cities starts with a street theatre and ends with the arrival of Krampus and his gang!

It is recommended that parents watch their children closely during the parades or in Christmas markets. Because sometimes there are irregularities that parents may not be able to distinguish the Krampus from others!
