To maintain our fire alarm system in operation we must test it at regular intervals according to standards. To test the detectors, we have to simulate the fire. So we need to know the characteristics of a fire such as smoke, heat, flame and some evaporating gases. For each of these features, we must select the appropriate simulators which generate smoke, heat, flame, required gases and so on with at least following features:
- Testers should not endanger people's health.
- The tester must not damage the equipment being tested or have a bad effect on its operation and leave residue on it.
- It must not be harmful to the environment.
- Approved by standard providers or manufacturer of the detector to test the product
Types of detector testers are as below:
- Smoke Detector Tester
- A smoke tester can which consists of several parts:
1) Spray can contains the fire aerosol
2) Chamber places over the detector and gives a brief push to release the test gas from can.
3) Telescope rode for height access.
- Smoke Pellets
- Smoke machine with liquid
- Heat Detector Tester
- A Heat tester can consist of several parts:
1) Chamber places over the detector and generate hot air.
2) Telescope rode for height access.
Note: A suitable simulator should be used in explosive areas.
- Flame Detector Tester
- There is a test lamp which used for testing the operation of flame detectors.
- A suitable simulator should be used in explosive areas.
- Gas detector tester
