Installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of fiber-optic system without suitable tools is time consuming and problematic. Working with fiber-optic cables, fiber-optic connectors and other related components needs more precision and skill than copper electrical cables.
Fiber-optic installation tools:
- Fiber-optic slitter: for removing the outer sheath of fiber cable.
- Fiber-optic stripper: for stripping the fiber jacket.
- MID-SPAN access tool: to access fiber in buffer tube in a mid-span location.
- Fiber-optic scribe: for removing optical fiber tips protruding from fiber-optic connectors.
- Fiber-optic cleaver: to cleave the end of an optical fiber properly.
- Fiber-optic cutter / scissor
- Fiber-optic crimper: to crimp connectors to wires.
- Fiber-optic cleaner (pure alcohol, dry cleaning kit, lint free cleaning wipe), connector, adapter, ferrules etc.
- Fiber-optic fusion splicer: for welding (fusing) two optical fibers together.
Some Installation Notes:
Note: Before pulling the cables, test the cable continuity on a reel visually (kink, crack etc.) and also with the VFL (visual fault locator) tester.
Note: Wear eye protection while using the visual fault locator.
