It is not easy to explain the differences between Austrian Standard German and Standard High German (Hochdeutsch). Because there are different dialects in Austria, which may not be correct in all cases.

1- Bavarian-Austrian (Bayerisch-Österreichisch)

  • Viennese dialect (Wiener Dialekt)
• Salzburg (Salzburg)
• Styria (Graz)
  • Styrian Dialect (Steirischer Dialekt)

2- Alemannic (Alemannisch)

• Voralberg (Bregenz)
• Tirol (Innsbruck)
  • some parts of the state

Following classification can be valid at least in one of the nine Austrian provinces.

   • DE: -chen or –lein / AT: -el or –erl
   • AT: dative comma to separate the indirect and direct objects
   • AT: definite article in front of proper names
