102: Chemical extinguishing agents

Chemical gas agents are kind of clean agents which used in chemical fire extinguishing systems to reduce the heat side of the fire triangle.

Chemical extinguishing agents types:

1- 3M Novec 1230 (CF₃CF₂C(=O)CF(CF₃)₂):

This agent developed by 3M Company and compound of carbon, fluorine and oxygen and has following specification:

• Colourless
• Low odor
• Non conductive
• Non corrosive
• GWP less than 1 (Global Warming Potential)
• Zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential)
• Concentration design for fire extinguishing: 3.34% (class A), 4.5% (class C)

2- FM 200 (CF₃-CHF-CF₃)

Heptafluoropropane also called FM200, HFC227ea and apaflurane is an agent compound of carbon, fluorine and hydrogen with below specifications:

• Colourless
• Odourless
• Non conductive
• High GWP (Global Warming Potential): 3220
• Zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential)
• Concentration design for fire extinguishing: 6.25% - 9%

Chemical gas extinguishers are also used in both types of extinguishers:

1- Portable extinguisher

• Hand held
• Wheeled

2- Fixed extinguisher (stationary system)

• Single sector
• Multi sector
