Gas detector is a device which detects the presence and leakage of the combustible, flammable and toxic gases or lack of oxygen in an area and warns the occupants. Alarm is generated directly by internal buzzer of detector or indirectly through a controller. There are different classifications for gas detectors. Some of them are as follows:
Gas detector types based on application:
- Residential
- Industrial
Gas detector types based on operation:
- Portable gas detector
- Fixed gas detector
Gas detector types based on gas categories:
- Combustible (e.g. methane, propane, hydrogen etc.)
- Flammable
- Toxic
- Oxygen depletion
Gas detector types based on gas sensor types:
- Electrochemical: for oxygen and toxic gases
- Catalytic bead (pellistor): for combustible gases
- Infrared point: for carbon dioxide and combustible gases
- PID (Photo Ionization detector): for toxic gases and volatile organic vapours
- FID (Flame Ionisation Detector)
- MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor): for combustible gases, toxic gases and chlorinated solvents
- Infrared imaging
- Infrared open path
- Thermal Conductivity
- Ultrasonic
- Holographic
- Colorimetric

Gas hazard types are as following:
Flammable
Toxic
Asphyxiant
