Styrian dialect (Der steirische Dialekt):

In Austria, the main language is German (Austrian German). There are different dialects throughout the country and other provinces. One of these dialects is the Styrian dialect, which is somewhat essential for newcomers to Styria (Steirmark).

Some dialect tips:

Change in pronouns:

  • “ich” => “i”
  • “dich” => “di”

While “e” is in the end, it’s often omitted.

  • Tische => Tisch

While “en” is in the end, “e” is often omitted.

  • kochen => kochn

While “el” is in the end, “e” is often omitted.

  • Apfel => Apfl

While “er” is in the end => “a”

  • Kinder => Kinda

Long “a” =>  “ou”

  • Malen => moulen

“a” =>  “o”

  • als => ols
  • da => do
  • das => dos
  • ja => jo
  • was => wos?
  • hat => hot
  • hast => host
  • gemacht => gmocht
  • kann => konn

“u” => “ua”

  • Muss => muass

“ü” => “ia

  • Müssen => miassn

“ir” => “ia”

  • Wird => wiad

“or” => “oa”

  • Ort => Oat

“ar” => “oa”

  • Bart => Boat

“ol” => “ul” or “ui”

  • Wollen => Wulln oder Wuin
  • ich will => “I wü”
  • du willst => “du wüsst”
  • er/sie/es will => “er/sie/es wü”
  • wir wollen => “wir wulln” or „wir wuin“
  • ihr wollt => “ihr wullts” or „wir wuits“
  • sie/Sie wollen =>“sie wulln” or „sie wuin“

Adding “erl” at the end for diminishment:

Adding “erl” at the end for expression of emotional affection:
